History
The history of Dekker is fascinating and very special, reason why we like to tell the whole story.
It is the year 1899, the threshold of the 20th century. Aircrafts do not exist yet and only a few years ago the first car was introduced in Holland. In this year a 23 year old sun of a farmer started his own business, as he was not interested in farm-work. That company shall grow in more than one hundred years to a modern and dynamic transport- and storage company, active in all European countries.
The name of the person who founded the company, nowadays called The Dekker Group, is Adrianus, curtly Janus. He starts with transporting milk cans from the farms to the factory with dog carts. The business goes well and soon the dog carts can be replaced by several horse-drawn carts. With his foresight Janus realizes the advantages of modern inventions, because as one of the first citizens of Ouderkerk he has a telephone! Than he decides to buy a motorboat for the transport of milk by the waterways to Rotterdam. This boat is the first motorized transport carriage of Janus.
In the year 1920 Janus takes the historical step to buy the first truck for the transport of milk. This is for the citizens of Ouderkerk a special adventure, and half the village turns out when that car crosses the streets while sounding the horn!
Janus dies when he is only 55 years old, but fortunately his son Jaap has the same perseverance as his father and he continues the business the same energetic way.
During world war II Dekker obtains a license of the Rijksverkeersinspectie to keep on trucking, as milk is a very important product. The next few years the reconstruction of the Netherlands will be realized. There is a prosper economy and Dekker takes advantage of this.
During the sixties Jaap sells and buys trucks regularly to keep his carpark in an up-to-date condition, a tradition which remains until today. It is a special moment when in 1963 Jaap's son Henk starts with vegetable oils. This is the first transport with other cargo than milk, with the purpose to expand this the time to come. Several years later the first transports with cocoa butter are carried out and the transport of chocolate begins.
In 1972 the company moves from the centre of the village to the new industrial estate IJsseldijk West.
When Jaap has retired after 50 years hard working, it becomes clear that Henk inherited the business talent of his forefathers, as in 1984 the company owns 22 driving units and Dekker starts focusing on storage. In the eighties the first six heated storage tanks are built with halls for the melting of fats.
For many years already the Dekker trucks drive to Belgium, but as a foreign company it was only allowed to unload there, but not to load, as this was preserved to Belgian companies only those days. Therefore it was decided in 1988 to start a Belgian transport company in Dendermonde, Dekker Transport B.V.B.A.
After the first tank park has been fully completed with storage tanks, the second tank park has been built, together with a new office for Dekker Tankopslag, which has been taken into use in the year 1997.
Upon the millennium The Dekker Group drives with about 80 trucks and 100 tank trailers, a new melting hall has been built and a third storage tank park is realized, so at the beginning of the 21st century we have 100 storage tanks with a total storage capacity of 22 million liters. Dekker also obtained considerably company interests in tank storage companies in Rotterdam Botlek and in the neighborhood of the Polish Poznan. Henk Dekker starts withdrawing from the daily business and his son in law Jan Duel becomes General Manager.
By the end of 2009 on the new industrial estate of Ouderkerk, the Zijdepark, an enormous extra storage hall is taken into use.
And what the future shall bring? Looking back to more than one hundred years of Dekker it is clear that there are a lot of things to happen. Times are changing and Dekker always goes along!
As Janus Dekker already said in 1899: the way is ahead! More than a century after he started with his dog cart, he may be very proud of the accomplishments of his son and grandson, the son in law and what all employees of Dekker have realized!
